Apparently, the title of this post is what I have used to reply to my friends whenever they asked me about my career, “Dude,I’m confused”. This dreaded term has haunted me for years now. Along with it many new words like ‘roadmap’ , ‘planning’ have made their way into my life.

Life asked me a question during my final year of college. “Next what to do after this?” Answering this question is a trauma , a Devil’s gift to our generation, with so many career choices , where everything seems to lure you towards itself. We are clueless n stuck !

I am a professional now. And I have had numerous nights of confusion, sleeplessness, frustration, all together!

Although there is no best way to understand which career is the best, but I certainly would share some takeaways from my personal experience, to manage the road to travel, and have no regrets.

1. Know what you do best

Know yourself, your best abilities. If you good in talking, take that forward into your career, which helps you achieve most. Never look at what others are doing, instead know yourself better. Talk to your best buddies , your parents or someone who has mentored you for a while. Once you get your shiny points, going ahead is a breeze.

2. Put your interests above the money

Getting what you want to do is the most priceless thing in itself. Money flows quickly into your pocket, once you make you abilities do the talking to the world. I see many graduates getting into companies or pursuing courses, just to make more money ( but thats not how it works in reality).Your qualification is not directly proportional to you pay package. Think about it. (Refresh the First point). You can make a lot of money, don’t worry, have patience. There is a plan for that as well (in my 4th point).

3. Get in touch. Social Networks work much more than just likes and tweets.

Find someone who is into something you want to get into. People out on Social Networks are the best source of a variety of useful information. Identify genuine people out there, who have some work experience in your domain, else you might fall into a bubble of useless suggestions which is not worth it.

4. Your career guide-map. Start making it now.

Its simple, NO Rocket science. After you decided onto your field of interest, or have taken up a new job, make a career plan for atleast 5 years from now. Initial couple of years enjoy your work, you will learn better. Do not hurry up the ladder, you might miss out on finer details while trying to race ahead.. In those couple years , meet new people, learn more about them, their work, look spaces in between for reinventing yourself(My next post: Re-Inventonic). Now when you get a clear picture of how things work, the world is wide open, race ahead! Money would come along, no bothering about that anymore.

In Short, choose a Career, not just a Job. Career is like your Best friend. It pays you to enjoy yourself, for life!
